Tiffen UV Filter
I bought this for my Nikon D40 (excellent value from Amazon) but decided it was a false economy. There is little point in buying a quality SLR and then putting an uncoated filter on the supplied kit lens, in low light this filter produces reflected images of any highlight in shot, in some circumstances it will do the same in daylight. Of course it protects the front element of your lens and prevents dust intrusion, but you can't just fit and forget as there are some circumstances when you would need to remove it.
A must have to protect your lens 
I bought this to prevent scratches etc to my lens.
For just a little money, your lens surface is protected.
This filter also prevents haze and UV rays.
Supplied in a handy protective plastic box.
Made by Tiffen, who is a very well established camera firm.
This filter which has a 52mm thread, screws nicely into my canon 50mm lens and tamron 55-200mm zoom lens.
